Benzoic acid C7H6O2 (or C6H5COOH), is a colorless crystalline solid and the simplest aromatic carboxylic acid. The name derived from gum benzoin, which was for a long time the only source for benzoic acid. Its salts are used as a food preservative and benzoic acid is an important precursor for the synthesis of many other organic substances. The salts and esters of benzoic acid are known as benzoates.

Processing technology

Put 1.4ml toluene and 70ml water into a 250ml three port round bottom flask equipped with an electric stirrer and a reflux condenser tube, and heat to boiling. Add in batches from the upper opening of the condenser pipe 4.3G potassium permanganate; The potassium permanganate adhered to the inner wall of the condenser tube is finally washed into the bottle with 25ml water. Continue boiling and shake the flask intermittently until the toluene layer almost disappears and no oil droplets appear in the reflux (about 4-5h).

The reaction mixture was filtered while hot and under reduced pressure, and the filter residue (MnO2) was washed with a small amount of hot water. Combine the filtrate and washing solution, cool in an ice water bath, and then acidify with concentrated hydrochloric acid (Congo red test paper) until benzoic acid is completely precipitated. Filter the precipitated benzoic acid under reduced pressure, wash with a small amount of cold water and squeeze to remove water. The prepared benzoic acid was dried on a boiling water bath. Output: About 1.0g. To obtain pure products, recrystallization can be carried out in water.

Pure benzoic acid is white flake or needle crystal. Melting point MP = 122.4 ºC.
