Crews called to chemical leak at North Smithfield transfer station

Jul 24, 2023

NORTH SMITHFIELD — Hazmat teams responded to the transfer station in North Smithfield Monday afternoon for reports of a chemical leak.

According to reports, North Smithfield firefighters found smoke coming from the bottom of a trash pile at Link Environmental Transfer Station around 2 p.m. on Monday, June 5. The Woonsocket Regional Hazmat Team, North Providence decontamination unit and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management's Hazardous Division were called in.

The group worked Monday to find the source of the leak, and identify and stabilize the chemical, which was contained inside of the building. The facility accepts bulky waste and other items, such as tires, batteries and appliances for disposal.

In 2019, hazmat teams worked for hours to clean up after multiple containers of hydrochloric acid were spilled in the building.

No injuries were reported on Monday, and officials said there was no threat to the public from the incident.
